Audi A4 (1996-97): [27,900 cars] Plastic ignition switch housing can fracture, which could cause accessories such as wipers and headlights to become inoperative.
BMW X5 (2001): [1,200 sport-utility vehicles] On certain vehicles, nut that secures axial joint of left steering tie rod to steering-gear box may not have been tightened securely. Nut could loosen and steering wheel play or misalignment might result, as well as noise from steering linkage. If vehicle remains in operation, tie rod could disconnect.
Buick Park Avenue (2000-01): [35,302 vehicles] Wiper system microprocessor may be susceptible to voltage transients, causing a "latch-up" condition that could prevent operation in both low- and high-speed modes.
Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra (1999-2000); Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL (2000): [1,383,922 vehicles] Clearance between front right-hand brake pipe and body cross sill could decrease to the point of allowing contact, which could result in damage and loss of brake fluid and pressure.
Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL (2000-01): [35,659 vehicles] Rear wheelhouse plugs may be loose or missing, allowing exhaust gases to flow forward under certain conditions and accumulate in rear wheelhouse.
Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus (2001): [only 419 cars] Passenger airbags on certain cars were built with defective aluminum extrusion sections, which may not retain the airbag door during a deployment
Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager (1993-94): [493,076 minivans with two-spoke luxury or four-spoke sport steering wheels] Steering wheel mounting can crack and separate from center hub attachment.
Dodge Ram (2001): [480 quad-cab pickup trucks] Upper control arms attached with cadmium-coated nuts can cause bolts to stretch; breakage of fasteners could cause axle to rotate forward during braking, which could twist steering linkage and possibly separate the brake lines.
Ford Contour (1998-2000): [3,750 bi-fuel cars] Fuel tank filler pipe grommet may have been damaged during installaton of the bi-fuel system, and could allow fuel leakage.
Ford Contour, Mercury Cougar/Mystique (1999-2000): [186,200 cars without ABS] A "pressure conscious reducing valve" in rear brakes may be subject to corrosion and malfunction when operated in areas that use salt compounds for road de-icing or dust control.
Note: A prior recall for this problem was limited to earlier models.
Ford Focus (2000): [203,700 cars] Rear wheel hub retaining nuts can loosen, allowing left rear wheel and brake drum assembly to separate.
Ford Focus (2000): [28,800 cars with speed control] Control cable could have a core wire that is long enough to catch on sleeve at cable end during wide-open throttle acceleration, preventing throttle from returning to idle.
Ford Mustang (1994-2001): [434,000 cars with manual transmissions] If vehicle is parked with parking brake not fully applied and not in first gear, it could roll on some grades.
Ford Windstar (1999-2000): [180,000 minivans] Certain instrument clusters without a "message center" fail to comply with Federal safety requirements.
Honda S2000 (2000): [9,147 cars] Under certain conditions, seatbelt retractor can deform and cause complete or frequent locking; as a result, seatbelts cannot be pulled out of retractor and used.
Hyundai Elantra (2001): [972 cars] Side airbag satellite sensors on certain cars were improperly manufactured, causing airbag warning light to illuminate and side airbags not to deploy as intended.
Isuzu Rodeo and Rodeo Sport (2001): [3,052 sport-utility vehicles] Incorrect rubber material may have been used for outer layer of fuel return hoses, which could ultimately crack and cause fuel leakage.
Land Rover Range Rover (1999): [2,957 sport-utility vehicles] Cork gasket at throttle body can fail, allowing coolant to leak from interface between de-icer plate and throttle body; coolant could ignite if it collects on high-temperature regions of the engine.
Mazda Triubute (2001): [5,700 sport-utility vehicles] Owner's manual may not indicate which seating positions are equipped with child restraint anchorages, and may not explain the markings that locate the lower anchorages.
Mercedes-Benz M-Class (2000): [16,246 sport-utility vehicles] Seatbelt anchor in rear folding middle seating position may fail in a crash.
Mercury Villager (1999-2000): [67,200 minivans] One or more of the five bolts that mount the rack-and-pinion steering gear may have been incorrectly tightened; could result in steering looseness and noise or vibration. Eventually, bolts could fracture or fall out.
Note: This recall also applied to 70,000 Nissan Quests.
Mercury Villager (2001): [2,500 minivans] Plastic trim cover around base of front seatbelt buckle may become trapped, eventually allowing seatbelt buckle bolt to loosen.
Mitsubishi Mirage and Montero Sport (1997-99) and Montero (1992-96): [210,000 vehicles] On Mirage with 1.5-liter engine and Montero/Montero Sport with 3.0-liter engine, bolt securing crankshaft pulley may become loose and fall off, resulting in loss of power steering assist.
Nissan Frontier and Xterra (2000): [76,652 vehicles with automatic transmissions] Shift cable lock plate may be too brittle and could break, so transmission would not shift out of "Park" position and gear indicated may differ from gear that is actually engaged.
Saturn L-Series/LS (2000): [1,637 cars with automatic transmissions] Transaxle shift cable clip may be missing or improperly seated, allowing cable to slip out of its bracket; driver may put shift lever into "Park," but transaxle may be in Reverse or Neutral.
Saturn SC/SL/SW (2000-01): [6,092 cars] Certain vehicles were built with an inadequate weld of vent valve on top portion of fuel tank; fuel spillage could occur during refueling or if vehicle were involved in a rollover.
Saturn SC/SL/SW (2000-01): [65,000 cars with automatic transmissions] Certain vehicles were built with an improperly adjusted park lock cable assembly, whereby it is possible to shift from "park" position with the ignition key removed.
Manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners, and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with federal safety standards is found. Recalls do not necessarily affect all examples of the specified model. To find out if some (or all) cars of a particular model have been recalled, call NHTSA's Auto Safety Hotline, toll-free, at 1-888-327-4236.
Information on recalls issued voluntarily by automakers may be obtained through a dealer, who may also be able to tell you if a specific car has had its recalls corrected.
Currently, only 72 percent of vehicle owners have recall work performed, though it's done free of charge at dealerships.
